Amazon is constantly improving functionality and adding new features to their cloud-based services, and the last few months have been no different. As an Amazon web services partner, we thought it would be prudent to outline some of the services and tools that the company has added and highlight the new opportunities that this cloud-based platform provides.

AWS X-Ray

Several of Amazon’s new cloud solutions have medically related naming conventions, which should give readers a hint as to their purpose. AWS X-Ray is a solution to help developers debug their distributed applications that are built using a microservices architecture. X-Ray allows you to understand how your underlying infrastructure is performing and it can help troubleshoot where performance errors and issues originate.

Think of X-Ray as a road map that tracks every request that travels through your applicationend to end, showing an ‘X-Ray’ of each underlying component. X-Ray can be used to manage applications that are both in production as well as in testing. Whether you’re simply trying to manage a simple three-tier application or massive microservices applications, X-Ray offers the flexibility you need.

AWS X-Ray is currently in preview, but should be released to all AWS customers relatively soon.

AWS PHD (Personal Health Dashboard)

Sticking with the medical theme, AWS PHD is another new offering to help provide better reporting when AWS is experiencing issues that could impact your cloud-based applications.

While Amazon Web Services has long offered the Service Health Dashboard, which gives you a personalized view into the general availability of your AWS infrastructure, Amazon PHD offers a much more detailed view into how your AWS resources are performing. Personal Health Dashboard offers real-time information to help better manage events that are currently in progress, as well as provides proactive notifications to allow for scheduled maintenance activities.

One of the features that sets Amazon PHD apart from other error-reporting tools is that it not only offers notifications, but also provides detailed troubleshooting instructions. This way, you not only see that the problem that occurred, but also the concrete steps on how to quickly resolve it, reducing the amount of time spent on the issue.

Another benefit of AWS Personal Health Dashboard is that it is tightly integrated with Amazon CloudWatch, which lets customers build custom rules and automated remediation actions. AWS PHD is powered by the AWS Health API, which allows you to integrate these notifications and data into existing in-house or third-party software tools. AWS PHD is currently available to all AWS customers and offers status and notification updates across all Regions and Availability Zones.
